Today is World Water Day! 💧
According to the UN, water is a universal human right. Water is life and without it we cannot live.
We know how important clean water is for the health of ourselves and our planet. However, over 1-in-3 of the world's population do not have access to clean drinking water.
This is both a human rights and public health crisis which primarily targets people who are impoverished, as well as marginalized communities. In Canada, 73% of First Nations reserve water systems are at high or medium risk of contamination.
Beyond the human impact, our freshwater sources are at risk due to pollution and the development of oil pipelines which jeopardize water sources. Climate change not only impacts the health of our planet, but the health of our communities.
World Water Day challenges us to acknowledge these global issues in order to pursue a better future for the health of ourselves, our communities, and our world. If you are looking for ways to help the fight for clean water access, you can:
- Donate to organizations like Charity Water and True North Aid.
- Support Indigenous water activists who are on the frontlines of the fight for clean drinking water.
- Vote for politicians who support clean water initiatives, climate activism, and environmental regulations.
- Continue to raise awareness for the lack of clean drinking water both in your own country and worldwide.
