The other day I found myself in a discussion about Instagram and its many pitfalls. And one of the ideas that was introduced was to not photograph any popular locations. And, I get it. It’s easy to feel dismayed when you see a million different people posting the exact same photo on here. The whole thing starts to feel a bit disingenuous and inauthentic.
But I’m going to let you in on a little secret: some places are popular for a reason. The Moraine Lakes, the Machu Picchus, the Grand Canyons. The Eiffel Towers, Trevi Fountains, Colosseums. The Pyramids of Giza, Leaning Towers of Pisa, the Taj Mahals. These are places that, even after seeing hundreds (or maybe even thousands) of photos…they really are worth the hype. Worth spending half your paycheck, flying halfway around the world, and fighting the crowds just to see them with your own eyes. The sort of places and experiences that cut deep grooves into your soul as the lathe is turning. And I can honestly say that sitting here while gazing out at the Eiffel Tower, at sunrise, was more than worth the pilgrimage.
