As I was spending the past couple of months with my family in France, I feel I need to turn attention to my home wine-making region, Jurançon.
Jurançon is a commune in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques in Southwest France; it is also the AOC, albeit a lesser-known one, but in my view deserving of the attention.
Influenced by the Atlantic and the winds that blow down from the Pyrenees drying up these frequently moist soils, the Appellation produces dry white wine “Jurançon Sec”, and a more sought-after sweet wine, “the classic Jurançon”. The latter has a medium to full yellow colour and an intense aroma of exotic tropical fruits and citrus. Rumour has it, it was used to christen Henry IV in the 16th-century. The grape varieties used are indigenous #GrosManseng, #PetitManseng, and #Courbu.
The dry whites pair wonderfully with oysters, seafood, foie gras, and lamb while the sweet ones are perfect for strong cheeses and deserts. All in all, quite unique and I will follow up with stories from a couple of local producers shortly.
Meanwhile a photo dump from various recent occasions: my cousin Audrey and I, mon ami Franc of
