Gargoyle statue. It was the year 1990-something when I got my hands on How to Make Wargames Terrain by GW - the one with the red cover. From what I recall there was a section on building statues in there and that was the one I followed right then in the 90s. It is a hard paper cut out shape forming a statue plinth decorated with paper borders and plastic skull symbols from Skeleton Warriors box set. It is glued to the styrofoam base which was sanded down and covered with PVA glue and sand. When I restored it from the storage box after over 20 years it was still waiting for the statue to be chosen and glued onto it. I bought a simple gargoyle statue from the Reaper Bones series and finished the build. From what I remember, the plinth was undercoated black and layered with several gray shades and dry brushed on top. I don’t think I was using any washes back then. The gargoyle itself was undercoated gray, washed down with black and dry brushed with several coats of gray shades. I'm so used to constructing my miniature spaces as dismantle-able sets that can be taken apart for photography (the original dollhouse which could be pulled apart into four quadrants, and later the Samsung project where every element had to be shipped as loose pieces), this time it was a WELCOME change to create something that was fully fixed down and not dismantle-able. Since this was meant to be a fully portable roombox, nothing could rattle around inside. So all the furniture is fixed down, and smaller items like books, picture frames and vases are kept in place with blu-tack. The only things that are removable are the bathroom door frame (so that I can get my hand in there more easily to stage scenes), and the pendant lights which can be taken off their ceiling hooks. Other than that, the only completely loose pieces are the pillows and cushions, but miraculously, those stay in place too when I travel with this thing. Old tree. As The Old World is wide and long there are a lot of old/dead trees everywhere. And this is one of them. It’s my first take on an old wire tree making method. I took metal wire and started turning and twisting it to form a base trunk shape. After creating several outlets for major branches, I had a basic tree form ready. With the help of additional layers on top and also using thinner metal wire for branches I completed the basic form. At this point it was quite sturdy but still formable. After achieving expected shape I used DAS clay to enfold the trunk and branches. Now, while the clay was still wet and tacky I sculpted the bark patterns. I decided to sculpt the hole in the tree to add character to it - it always looks interesting on old trees. When it finally dried I undercoated it my standard gray and then with browns and dark washes. It was all about dry brushing it with lighter colors from now on - mainly light browns and off white. I varnished it heavily with matte varnish as a final step. Then the tree was mounted on to the base of the scenery piece it was intended for - I’ll showcase it another time. This suitcase has been a surprising delight to travel with. A little over 3 kilos (thanks to using a lot less MDF and a lot more foam core than I usually do), it's light enough to carry around, and small enough to fit in the airport security tray or slide into the overhead bin. Tower building. A project with an interesting origin story. I got some honey and it had 6-walled box I instantly recognized as a future tower structure. I just needed to incorporate it into a building. When I started, I was completely absorbed in the process from start to finish, even though the project lasted for two holiday months according to photo timestamps.The body of the build is made from this hexagonal cardboard box and XPS foam. I wanted the building to have an interesting shape. The base structure was done relatively quickly and this is where the major part of the project started as you can imagine. Hundreds of XPS bricks - so many of them. I planned for the building to have a lot of windows which I molded from a 3D print of a Mordheim-styled window project. I needed to have some window overlay in place so I glued cardboard to the walls where I planned to place the windows. The honey-box allowed me to make this building modular - which is neat - it takes less space when stored in a box. I started to glue stone bricks all over the building from bottom to top and attach windows where I met the placeholder windows sketching I made earlier. I must say the bricking part was challenging to say the least. The roof was done by gluing a thin sheet of wood to the XPS structure followed by layers of roof shingles (egg-carton method). I part of the building is wooden - just wanted some variability. When done, everything was primed my usual gray. Wooden part is my usual bone/off-white color and the roof shingles in red. Next came the black wash to fill in all those small spaces in between the bricks and shingles. Then the usual, dry brushing with lighter grays and white for walls, brown and black washes for wood finished with off-white dry brush. Roofwas finished with different shades of red and even orange to lighten it up.
