Nashville Pussy have been one of my favourite rock bands for almost 25 years. When you’re 14 and you see an add in Metal Hammer magazine for an album called “Let Them Eat Pussy”, you’re gonna check it out. I still remember watching the download progress bars on Napster for those tunes back in the dial-up days (I’m so old). The music was like a mule kick to my ear drum. AC/DC, Motorhead & Ted Nugent inspired muscle rock ‘n roll with some southern barbecue boogie and a seedy gunk punk degenerate slob shtick befitting of the band name. I’ve bought just about all their records ‘n even went back to frontman, Blaine Cartwright’s earlier band, Nine Pound Hammer. My fandom congealed when I saw the band live for the first time at the old Gaelic Club in Sydney sometime in the early-to-mid 2000s - the stage stompin, sonically searing, hysterical rock music was the kinda dirty yet wholesome fun time that ONLY a live rock ‘n roll band can provide.

So almost 2 decades later the line up has changed but the recipe hasn’t. Nashville Pussy are still one of the most high energy rock ‘n roll acts you can see. You’d be hard pressed to find any live entertainer as energetic and frenzied as Ruyter Suys. She’s a lead guitar demon - and part of why I wound up shootin’ so many photos, I had no idea if any of ‘em were gonna be in focus! Blaine’s caustic bark ‘n hilariously pungent lyrics are likely to cause the woke to choke - good thing they wouldn’t be caught dead seeing a band called Nashville Pussy. The relatively new rhythm section of Bassist Bonnie Buitrago & Dusty Watson on drums keep the party tight, groovin’ ‘n movin’. Just google Dusty’s resume, dude has played with everybody.
🎸
There just aren’t too many acts like Nashville Pussy still going strong. The late 90’s were a glorious time for the vainglorious ‘n vulgar - back when people still had a sense of humour about life. Does humour belong in music? As long as bands like Nashville Pussy keep touring it sure does.
