Queer Califas: Transitory Transmissions
Mexico City, Mexico
February 10th and 11th 2023 (Only)
For the artist Rubén Esparza, the concept or jolt of an idea is paramount – he is from the school of "the first thought is the best thought," whether it bears fruit or not. Materiality is secondary or tertiary in Esparza's works. With concepts that grapple with identity and experience, in this particular series, the digital, the historical, the libidinal, and the mass-produced are other important subtexts central to these somewhat ready-made artworks. Presented here are a series of blankets depicting a montage of image details taken from queer pornography and historical European and Indigenous sources – superimposing historical vestiges onto nude brown and white torsos…
…The artist encourages us to use the blankets for a picnic or a spontaneous convivial moment.
"Experience is never limited, and it is never complete; it is an immense sensibility, a kind of huge spider-web of the finest silken threads suspended in the chamber of consciousness and catching every air-borne particle in its tissue."
