Big Meanie
.
This is my cat, Hobbes. Think "Calvin and" not "Leviathan".
.
I took her in from the cold 7 years ago. She commutes to work with me. She follows me around the house. She has also , eaten $200 worth of charging cords, left me bleeding from a network of scratches, and sent me to the ER.
.
Growing up, I wasn't allowed to go farther than could be seen from the front yard. This left only one kid within range. He was a rich kid, a year older than me. He was consistently less than kind, but what were my options? I became accustomed to accepting poor treatment in exchange for my loyalty. I took bullying over loneliness.
.
It seems to me, that I've repeated this behavior across time. My wife has, on multiple occasions, pointed out how far I'll bend in order to not lose someone.
.
This rich kid? I made him best man in my wedding. Old habits die hard, I guess. A couple years later he ghosted me. I have no idea why. I sent an email to his work account about a month ago, outing myself and updating my contact info.
.
I doubt I'll ever hear back.
.
"Yes, Hobbesie, you Big Meanie, I can top up your water. Yup. Kibble too, just don't eat my headphones."
