Pictured is Australian Army Sergeant: Matthew R. Locke, assigned to the elite Special Air Service Regiment (SASR), who was sadly killed in action whilst serving in Afghanistan on October 23rd 2007. Born on March 16th 1974 in Bellingen, New South Wales, he enlisted in the Army on June 11th 1991 at the age of 17. He completed initial recruit training at the Army Recruit Training Centre in Kapooka, New South Wales and commenced Initial Employment Training on September 10th 1991. Trained as an Infantry Soldier, he was assigned to the 5th/7th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment. He took further training whilst serving with the Royal Australian Infantry Corps, and eventually became a Small Arms Coach. In November 1997, he volunteered for Special Forces Selection and completed the Special Air Service Selection Course, and completed further training in patrolling, demolitions, parachuting and medical. He was then assigned to the 3rd Special Air Service Squadron. He deployed to East Timor in 2001, as well as deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq. He was on his fourth tour of Afghanistan when he was killed in action, when his unit was ambushed by enemy insurgents.
