Polite reminder to everyone in my feed that the Gateway of India at Apollo Bandar was built to commemorate the arrival of George V, Emperor of India and his wife Mary of Teck, Empress consort, to British India in 1911. Then Bombay, it was the first visit ever of a British Monarch. Nothing existed then and subsequent campaigns resulted in a model and architect George Wittet executing a monument that has been acknowledged as a supreme example colonial might and conquest. Think about it, the British reclaimed land from the sea, built a sea wall and then this monument to celebrate the arrival and passage of a colonial monarch into India. The names of the Emperor and Empress are etched into the stone! All across Mumbai we’ve hauled statues of King George and Queen Victoria and relegated them to museum compounds, mutilated and defaced them but here it’s okay? Am not certainly not serving up an idea to deface/destroy/debunk this monument, for it is today an important landmark and a part of our heritage. Unfortunately it is also a very very painful part of our heritage and a soaring monument built to proclaim colonial subjugation.The choice of the venue therefore was quite strange for an international fashion house to stage a fashion show- the only honest reason I can think off is the easy availability of the spectacular Taj along side ( now that heritage is worth being proud !) Pictured is Australian Army Sergeant: Matthew R. Locke, assigned to the elite Special Air Service Regiment (SASR), who was sadly killed in action whilst serving in Afghanistan on October 23rd 2007. Born on March 16th 1974 in Bellingen, New South Wales, he enlisted in the Army on June 11th 1991 at the age of 17. He completed initial recruit training at the Army Recruit Training Centre in Kapooka, New South Wales and commenced Initial Employment Training on September 10th 1991. Trained as an Infantry Soldier, he was assigned to the 5th/7th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment. He took further training whilst serving with the Royal Australian Infantry Corps, and eventually became a Small Arms Coach. In November 1997, he volunteered for Special Forces Selection and completed the Special Air Service Selection Course, and completed further training in patrolling, demolitions, parachuting and medical. He was then assigned to the 3rd Special Air Service Squadron. He deployed to East Timor in 2001, as well as deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq. He was on his fourth tour of Afghanistan when he was killed in action, when his unit was ambushed by enemy insurgents. In recognition of his actions in combat during his 2006 deployment, he was awarded the Medal for Gallantry. Il battaglione partecipò con un'ampia azione durante i combattimenti in Tunisia ed è stato successivamente schierato sul fronte italiano nel dicembre dello stesso anno.
