The 2011 Japan earthquake and tsunami, officially named by the Japan Meteorological Agency as the 2011 Tōhoku Region Pacific Coast Earthquake (東北地方太平洋沖地震 Tōhoku Chihō Taiheiyō-oki Jishin[5]?) The Great East Japan Earthquake (東日本大震災 Higashi-Nihon Dai-shinsai) of March 11, 2011, was an earthquake of magnitude Mw = 9.1,[1][6] which created tsunami waves of up to 40 .5 m.[7] The earthquake occurred at 14:46:23 local time (05:46:23 UTC) on Friday, March 11, 2011. The epicenter of the earthquake was located in the sea, off off the coast of Honshu, 130 km east of Sendai, in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, at a depth of 29.9 km. The earthquake lasted approximately six minutes, according to seismologists.[2] The USGS explained that the earthquake occurred because of a displacement near the subducting plate interface zone between the Pacific plate and the North American plate.
