R&B duo Zhané, comprised of Renée Neufville and Jean Norris (now Baylor), got their start singing together at university events at Temple University, where they met. After formally deciding to form a duo, Zhané were given the opportunity to feature on the Queen Latifah-led Flavor Unit compilation album “Roll Wit the Flava.” This project birthed their hit single ‘Hey Mr. DJ’, which became the breakout single from the compilation and the group’s grand introduction to the masses. Following the success of ‘Hey Mr. DJ,’ Zhané quickly signed with Motown and expedited the production of a full-length album. With the help of Naughty By Nature, the ladies of Zhané cowrote and coproduced “Pronounced Jah-Nay,” their debut studio album which blends R&B, with Funk and Hip Hop influences. A mix of funky dance tracks alongside stellar ballads, Jean and Renée showcase their beautiful harmonies through infectious melodies and tender songwriting. Songs like Hey Mr. DJ and Vibe never fail to get you moving and grooving while slower cuts like Sweet Taste of Love and On My Mind musically captures listeners’ ears and hearts. I came across Zhané in the last two years, after seeing comments under a VanJess video saying how they reminded them of Zhané. After a deep-dive of their discography, I became enamoured with their sound and essence. I already had a copy of this album’s repress but wanted an original copy. I was able to find the UK presses of both their albums on Discogs for an affordable price and jumped on them. The second inclusion on my ‘92 Fat Tape was released on August 14th in the Nine-Deuce. “True Fuschnick” was the third single from the Fu-Schnickens debut LP “F.U. Don’t Take It Personal” and was my personal favorite from their album. ATCQ blessed Chip, Moc & Poc Fu with this hype beat and you know it’s about to be ON when that kazoo like “hum” kicks in and that 🔥 James Brown percussion sample drops! Over the next few weeks I’m putting together a ‘92 Fat Tape as a homage to one of my favorite sections of The Source Magazine throughout the 90’s. Back then, the “Fat Tape” section of the mag showcased 15 current 🔥 tracks every month recommended and compiled by The Source Staff. It wasn’t a “Top 15 Countdown” or a ranking in any way. They also weren’t always singles, some were album cuts, but all were dope. Once I complete this 15 part post I’ll link a Spotify playlist in my bio of them all. 29 years ago today, Queen Latifah dropped her iconic third studio album, "Black Reign". The album peaked at #60 on the Billboard 200 & #15 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums Chart & is RIAA Certified Gold. The singles released include "U.N.I.T.Y." ( #23 on the Billboard Hot 100 & #7 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Singles Chart), "Just Another Day" ( #54 & #37), "Black Hand Side" ( #29 R&B/Hip-Hop), "Weekend Love" ( #70 & #29) & "I Can't Understand You". Produced by Sidney "S.I.D." Reynolds, DJ KayGee (Of Naughty By Nature), Tony Dofat, & Latifah herself, “Black Reign” is a Hip-Hop album with elements of Jazz-Rap & Reggae, & is the follow up album from Latifah’s previous album, “Nature of a Sista”. After signing with Motown Records, Latifah began work on “Black Reign”, an album that features harder & tougher beats, smoothed with jazz under/overtones, with topics including everyday street life, love, infidelity, female empowerment, black empowerment & black unity. The album also featured more Hip-Hop artists than that from her previous albums, including Treach of Naughty By Nature, KRS-One Heavy D.
