In this series of paintings, the houses are set against a backdrop of sunset-drenched skies, with no trace of human presence in any of the frames. Opening tomorrow “Escape to B-Roll” solo exhibition by New York based artist Stacy Leigh at Woaw Gallery Central. Stacy Leigh (b. 1971, New York, NY) attended New York University, and currently lives and works in New York City. In 2017, she held her first solo exhibition of paintings Nerves at the Fortnight Institute in New York, where American painter and photographer Richard Prince discovered her figurative works and gave them prominence. Most recently, Leigh presented her solo presentation, The Condition of Things, at Harper’s Gallery in August 2022. The title of the show, Escape to B-Roll, was born from Stacy’s love for documentary films. The term B-roll originates from the early days of film, when editors inserted supplemental footage (B-roll) into the main footage (A-roll), to hide visible lines where two pieces of film were joined. In modern film and video production, B-roll describes all of the footage that isn't the main action. “The paintings for this show are different from my other works in that I omitted the human form. Leaving people out of the paintings gave me more freedom to use objects as surrogate human energy. The skies, the cars, even the houses themselves, all have their own energy about them. The paintings in this series depict a feeling of suburban calm surrounded by potted plants, dogs, and handsome cars. Behind half-drawn shutters, viewers are offered glimpses into the cozy interiors of warmly-lit houses, and on the outside, the neatly-trimmed lawns and isolated cliffs provide the setting for weekend barbecues and picnics on a summer’s day.
