Terry Stigdon has always believed she was created for service. A dedicated nurse, Terry spent nearly 20 years at Indiana’s Riley Hospital for Children in the pediatric intensive care unit, emergency medicine, and trauma center serving children and their families at their most vulnerable and frightening life moments. While at Riley, Terry also pursued her master’s degree in nursing leadership and management from WGU. In late 2017, Terry received a call from the office of Indiana’s Governor Eric Holcomb. “When I got tapped to be the Executive Director of Indiana Department Of Child Services, all I could see was an opportunity to serve a lot of kids and their families that really needed help now, just like when I was at Riley,” says Terry. She was appointed executive director as part of Gov. Holcomb’s sweeping reform of the state’s child welfare agency. In her first year in her new position, Terry implemented changes aimed at offering the best service to Hoosier children and families. “I came in with a spirit of giving people the space to act and lead in a way they need to enact change. I believe in the best in people, and I love to see people be more than they ever thought they could be. It really did work. We saw wonderful outcomes working with families and children.” As a result of her efforts to provide the right care to the right child at the right time, the state has seen a decrease in children in residential treatment and foster care. "I did it, y’all. Finally finished up my MBA - Healthcare Management program. WGU’s first commencement weekend of the year was held in NOLA this past weekend. When the 2023 commencement weekend locations were released back in December, I had asked my dad which one we should attend thinking he’d just choose the one in Seattle this summer, but he surprised me by picking NOLA, so voila! Tickets were booked! So blessed to have been able to spend this past weekend with my parents as well as my Rashah, my Ading Jazzy, and my Bubbies joining us from Portland. Thank you for coming along for the ride and cheering me on. Seriously. It meant the world to me to have you join me and my parents. I love you three to the moon and back a million times. And to everyone else who’s offered words of encouragement and allowed me to endlessly complain about exams and papers since basically the pandemic started 🤣 I appreciate you for real, for real.
