Spectroscopic analysis of the crater revealed solidified volcanic material in the southern portion (left) of Gassendi's floor. The smaller crater immediately to the right is Gassendi A, and the one beyond that is Gassendi B. As solar activity ramps up, prominences line the Sun's limb. Meanwhile, filaments cut dark paths in the solar disk, and bright plage surrounds two small sunspot groups at center. Jim Militello captured this image of active regions 3213 and 3214 on February 12, 2023, from Tucson, Arizona, using a Coronado 90-mm SolarMax III Hydrogen-Alpha Solar telescope and a ZWO ASI178MM camera.
This lunar formation, titled Sinus Iridum, is better known by its more poetic name, the Bay of Rainbows 🌈 This 260-kilometer-wide "bay" is filled with basaltic lavas and pockmarked by a handful of tiny craters. The real showstopper, however, is the Jura Mountain range surrounding the Bay. NGC 1365 is located about 56 million light-years away in the constellation Fornax. At 200,000 light-years across (nearly twice the length of the Milky Way). The dense nebula at its nucleus creates the perfect conditions for new stars to form as gas and dust contract and eventually collapse inward. NGC 1365's supermassive central black hole rotates close to the speed of light and has a mass more than 2 million times greater than that of our Sun. Kevin Morefield captured this image in December 2022 from El Sauce Observatory in Chile using a PlaneWave 17-inch Corrected Dall-Kirkham telescope, a PlaneWave L-600 mount, and an ATIK Apx60 CMOS camera. NASA's Lucy spacecraft has added a new target to its 12-year mission: 152830 Dinkinesh (1999 VD57), a main belt asteroid it will visit this November.⠀ ⠀ The rendezvous just outside of the orbit of Mars will give the team a chance to put the spacecraft’s asteroid-tracking navigation system to the test.⠀ ⠀ In the past, spacecraft had to simply point and scan the area where an asteroid was expected to be, and oftentimes a majority of pictures would simply come back blank.
