greetings to the new folks / how y’all feelin? It’s the szn for outdoor conf calls in NYC 🌱 I’m a writer. my work is mostly at the nexus of food as culture, identity, dining and using these subjects to explore and challenge who we’ve been and who we say we wanna be. I consult and strategize. I’m born-and-raised Californian, having lived in Albany, Clovis, Moreno Valley, and Los Angeles but people will say I’m from LA and I don’t bother with corrections anymore. I lived in the South for 15 years, Atlanta and Gainesville FL, and I traveled the region quite a bit, I think it’s the most misunderstood area of the U.S. I live in Brooklyn since pre-pandy 2020, about 11 years into my writing career and I say this bc ppl assume things about having to be in NYC for media. My name is Edo, from Nigeria where my dad was from, reppin Benin people and if that is confusing you can thank the British! My mom’s family is from Los Angeles by way of Mississippi and Louisiana. Osayi means “God creates” so know who you’re talking to! But some of y’all will still try it and unfollow when you get mad, I have seen the boring cycle, enjoy yourself while you can 😅 Most of the action is in the Stories bc this grid be stressing me out, I don’t like what the engagement patterns say about any of us so I stopped looking at insights and you won’t see likes/view counts here unless I forget to hide ‘em I’ve spent a lot of time being serious about serious things and more than ever I am intently practicing a life of joy. I laugh a lot, dance a LOT, I am tipsy sometimes, I’m not afraid of my aging body or sexy vibes or sitting on a beach taking virtual mtgs, I try to be clear, and while I have many opinions I don’t think you’re entitled to all of them so don’t come looking for a Black Lady North Star on the Issue of the Day. A bish has deadlines! And naps to take. I’m just one magical Black girl livin her own life. Mostly I hope you read what I write bc that’s how this jamboree got poppin!

touched down in that gorgeous low-low Charleston for @chswineandfood // had the best time with the best crew. according to the 60 smiling attendees of our groundbreaking tasting workshop, our convo about the cultural history of rum, whiskey, moonshine, cognac, and tequila might have been DA BEST AT DA FEST. we laughed a lot. we taught a lot. we got into how enslaved expertise in rum built the wealth of nations around the world. we got into why cognac is so Black in the US market. we talked tequila runners and why at the turn of the century the mint julep was such a genteel dranky drank (ice ice baby). we rum rickied. we paloma-ed. 🥃🥃 thanks to bev director @cha_squared for letting me curate this convo and talented lineup, s/o to the brilliant @thedrinkingcoach @unclemom31 @kapri.possible let’s take this show on the road (with roadies!) thanks to the festival and @bluebicyclebooks for supporting my cookbook authorship, i was so happy to meet new and familiar readers 📚📚

these are my people! ✨when i was fumbling around in the photo albums with my 92-yo great aunt we came across various copies of this image.✨ from left, my great grandfather Allen Sr, his eldest my grandfather Allen Jr, my great aunt Josephine, my grandma Ruth, my great aunt Louella who we call Babe bc she was the youngest, my great grandmother Emma, and my great uncle Kirk. ✨they are all from Louisiana except for my grandmother who was from Laurel, Mississippi. they are laughing after a meal at Clifton’s in Los Angeles in 1954. ✨i love seeing them outside like this. i love the side eye my aunt Jo is serving my grandpa like only a sister can look at her brother kekekeke.✨ i love that these are the folks who brought me to restaurants and taught me how to order and taught me how to enjoy and indulge and have fun with staff. i love that they documented their joy in crazy times bc a lot was trash for Black Southern folks in 1954 ok. ✨ i asked my great aunt Babe if the food was good and she said, “well surely, Ruth wouldn’t have taken us there if it wasn’t” i know that’s right 😍😍 in this photo are people who didn’t have much but made their way. gramps was an educator with advanced degrees in humanities grandpa graduated in computer engineering aunt Jo was in public health and nursing grandma was social worker and became the first woman / Black director of corrections for the state of Calif aunt Babe was a teacher with a masters of education grandmother Emma was an educator Kirk was a dr of optometry — maybe the first Black one in Louisiana they just kept going. and here i am ✨✨

even casual fans of American 20th century design cannot help but to be taken with the wondrous legacy of Charles and Ray Eames. if you don’t know, everything you’re looking at today is influenced by this duo ✨ the @eamesinstitute of Infinite Curiosity builds on that history in part by asking exciting creators to reflect on a 1972 film q&a in which the Eames answer fundamental and i’d say spiritual queries about design from the French curator Madame L’Amic. ✨ as part of an ongoing feature in the institute magazine Kazam!, they posed those same questions to theeeee @david_zilber who i also profiled in The Rise cookbook a few years ago. i was thrilled to write the intro to this classic yet reimagined interview.
