I love watching the Milky Way rise anywhere in the world. There is something special about seeing it’s vast intricacies reveal themselves from our perch aboard Spaceship Earth.
This time-lapse was from my Utah’s National Parks Night Photography workshop in May, 2023 following the Nightscaper Conference in Kanab. Our group enjoyed great conditions for exploring the cosmos from one of the most beautiful places on earth.
I used my Sky Watcher Star Adventurer Gti to track the sky while my camera captured 1,056 images, each with ISO 6400, f/3.5, 10 seconds with a 14 mm focal length lens on my Nikon D850.

I’m also preparing a video tutorial explaining how you can create your own Spaceship Earth time-lapse - watch this space for more details!

JUST FIVE MINUTES APART
Before & after images, only five minutes apart, during a planned power outage and subsequent return to full power. This was in Kanab, Utah, a week or so ago at the 2023 Nightscaper Conference.
We were informed during the conference that the power to the entire city of Kanab would be cut off at midnight one night to allow a grid transformer to be replaced. Many folks at the conference took advantage of this rare event to photograph the Milky Way over a dark city when usually the view is obscured by city lights.
I arose at 4 am to explore the situation and positioned myself in the heart of Kanab and at the north end of its main thoroughfare. I captured many images of the Milky Way shining over the now-dark homes and businesses.
Suddenly the power was returned and the Milky Way was once again drowned out by all the city lights as can see (or not see to be more accurate). Just goes to show what we’re missing!

I had the great pleasure last night of meeting three new friends in Arches National Park, all of us enjoying a quiet night under the stars. Together with everyone else, they allowed my Instagram community to reach over 5,000! Little did I know when I began this journey years ago that it would take me where it has. I’m so very grateful for the opportunity to connect with each of you. The night sky allows us to share experiences, collectively, unlike any thing else. Let’s keep on exploring it together!

What a show! From St. Paul, Minnesota around 11 pm CDT, Bortle 7/8. Yes, please!
This aurora display was predicted a couple days ago and arrived remarkably on schedule. It was so much fun enjoying the celebration last night with friends around the globe, as darkness spread westward across the earth and the strength of aurora show unfolded. This was certainly one for the books!
And there’s a good chance more displays like this are on the way in coming months, as we haven’t yet reached the peak of the current 11-year solar cycle.

Good luck for everyone out photographing the Aurora tonight! (Image is from August, 2019)
Here are some tips :
🟥face north, as dark as possible site
🟩camera -> tripod
🟪M focus mode
🟥focus on distant light/star
🟩M exposure mode
🟪2 - 5 secs to get pillars, 10-20 secs if dim
🟥ISO 3200 - 12,800
🟩f/2.8 - f/4.0
🟪image sequence if possible to capture motion
The south side of a lake is always good, as is a bridge over a slow river.
Good luck!

Happy Earth Day & last day of International Dark Sky Week!
If you squint, you may be able to make out the constellation Orion, seen here over downtown, Minneapolis, Minnesota. The bad news is that Orion is difficult to see because of all the ambient lights. The good news is that in fact, we CAN see it, even from this very bright location, and we can also all help reduce our use of lights at night. Learn more about light pollution from the International Dark Sky Association. Reducing light at night helps both the sky and the earth.
