McGrath Breast Care Nurses are strong, brilliant and highly qualified professionals who provide equitable and expert medical care to people navigating the complexities of a breast cancer diagnosis. Together they’ve supported over 118,000 families across Australia, for free. #internationalwomensday
Our supporters go to some incredible lengths to support McGrath Breast Care Nurses and families experiencing breast cancer, but duo Rosie and Ange may take the cake for one of the longest journey we’ve seen yet. 🚣♀️🌊 In December, Rosie and Ange set off from La Gomera, Tenerife to row 3,000 nautical miles across the Atlantic Ocean to Antigua in the Talisker Whiskey Atlantic Challenge. It took the team, which they named ‘But a Dream’, 61 days to complete the gruelling journey. Aussie Pro Basketballer, Tiana Mangakahia was diagnosed with breast cancer at just 23 years old after discovering a lump on her left breast while showering. In an instant, Tiana’s world changed. She’d just been named in the Opal’s preliminary Olympic squad and was living in New York playing for Syracuse University and suddenly she found herself navigating the complexities of a breast cancer diagnosis. Now, three and a half years on Tiana is hitting the court with her beloved Sydney Flames s for a pink round on 24th of February to help ensure that people just like her have care when they need it most. It’s the Country Music Capital of Australia so it only makes sense that Tamworth is also the home of the annual Music for McGrath concert championed by Carolyn and Vaughan! Inspired by her cousin Anni’s breast cancer experience, each year Carolyn and her friend Vaughan rally a star-studded line-up, this year including Aleyce Simmonds, Shane Nicholson and Adam Harvey, for a night of country music. Since their first event, the Tamworth community have helped to raise over $200,000 to ensure that more Australian families receive the care of a McGrath Breast Care Nurse. But for Carolyn it's more than simply a night of great music, it’s personal. “Anni was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2003. She fought it but eventually it metastasised, and she passed away in October 2021. This event helps me feel connected to her still” shares Carolyn.
