A personal post… ❤️ On May 3rd 2023 we sadly lost our incredible mother, Jasvir Kang…. She was one of a kind, a pioneer who came to England from India in the 70’s. The messages we’ve had as a family have been overwhelming… As a mother & grandmother she taught us about kindness, empathy and treating everyone the same regardless of background… these views poured into her weekly shows as a radio presenter - she would get phone in’s from listeners all over the country who wanted advice or request songs and share their poetry.. She was a poet and a writer, who wrote from the heart… with raw honesty. There is so much to celebrate yet we are utterly heartbroken. Our mother lived with a vascular dementia diagnosis, which meant we also lived with it as a family. Over the years it’s been too painful to openly talk about… a slow grief as you watch someone you love lose parts of themselves… yet there was always hope, a way forward with love and compassion…mum’s resilience shone, she fought hard but it was time for her to let go… I’ll miss holding your hand. The Arbor is a film about playwright #AndreaDunbar - it’s also about memories, recollection, class, addiction, mothers and daughters - and carving out space to write. Andrea would write whenever and wherever she could… She wrote her first play, The Arbor at 15, at 18 she was the youngest playwright to have her work staged @royalcourttheatre I played her daughter, Lorraine Dunbar in the film, @christinebottomley2018 played the other daughter, Lisa. Making Clio Barnard’s #TheArbor was a quietly beautiful experience.. I was 8 months pregnant…The incredible cast & crew were all committed to telling Andrea’s story in a pretty unique way… She still resonates for me as a writer… it’s not easy to carve out space to create…but if you need to do it, there’s always a way. ❤️ @bfi are screening #TheArbor as part of their #northernvoices season in April 11th & 30th… 🎥
#worldtheatreday🎭 I discovered recently that my first stage play #GLOW is still studied by year 8/9 in schools… I wrote it in 2003, commissioned by the brilliant young peoples theatre company, @theatrecentre …A story about a teenage Asian girl boxer & her imaginary conversations with Muhammad Ali… directed by superstar @dawndirector 🙌🏽 @theatrecentre gave me my first ever commission as a writer…Theatre companies like this give invaluable experience & opportunities for anyone wanting to get into the Arts… as well as nurturing stories from all backgrounds. 💜
