Something that is not widely known about Keith Haring is that he was a pioneer in digital art. He created these 5 works on a Commodore Amiga computer in 1987 that was given to him by his buddy Timothy Leary. To learn more, links to the articles appear in our story and bio.

Where can you find the only surviving portion of Keith Haring’s Pop Shop mural? 🤔 Right inside the New-York Historical Society (@nyhistory ), a Museum and Library on Central Park West in New York City. #KeithHaring (1958-1990) was best known for his graffiti-inspired drawings and for his activism for AIDS awareness. In 1986, he opened the Pop Shop at 292 Lafayette Street to make his art affordable and accessible to all. After the artist’s death from AIDS in 1990, the Keith Haring Foundation (@keithharingfoundation ) continued to run the Pop Shop until 2005, when rent increases forced it to close. Celebrate July 4 with Keith Haring’s Lady Liberty! 🗽🇺🇸 The Broad is OPEN today from 11 a.m.–5 p.m. Haring’s iconic depiction of our nation’s icon, Statue of Liberty (1982), is one of the many artworks made in collaboration with LAII (Angel Ortiz), who was 13 years old when they met in 1980. The sculpture, which stands almost 8 feet tall, is saturated with fluorescent green, pink, yellow, and orange enamel, and acrylic paint on fiberglass, interspersed with Ortiz’s dynamic designs. The torch, meant to light the way to freedom, is replaced with a black lightbulb. Haring wrote about the first meeting and their subsequent connection: “The contrast between our lines was exciting. There is something uniquely satisfying to me in the fusion between our two styles of drawing.” “We painted so much,” Angel says. “We did walls together; we did shows together... we did everything. Keith Haring was just 11 years old at the time, but he was undoubtedly affected by the mark it left on history. Haring used his art as social activism, often responding to the marginalization of the LGBTQ community. He created many works that draw attention to the issue of HIV/AIDS—a selection of which are currently on view in the last gallery of our exhibition—at a time when the virus was perceived only to affect marginalized populations.
