El Nino Loves Goofy-Foots 😀😀😀😀 What does El Nino mean for the Mentawai? The last El Nino years were 2016 and 2019 and typically El Nino results in slightly less swell, less rain and more trade winds. El Nino kicked in late this year and the Mentawai, being located next to the equator, is not as affected as the rest of Indonesia. Translation? We expect a slightly drier season, slightly less swell and the winds tilt a bit more for the lefts. If you're a goofy-foot or a lover of lefts, you're a happy human. Are You Riding the Right Boards for the Mentawai? 🧐🧐🧐🧐 Chris has been a long term Kandui guest and during Covid19 made the move to the Mentawais and hasn't looked back. He's a good example of an everyday guy that has really spent the time working with us and our surfboards partners to get him on the right equipment to take advantage of the best swells each year. Chris recently purchased a Christenson Water Lion and was one of the standouts during the last Rifles swell. The Water Lion is a great board for the Mentawai, volume forward, a bit shorter than a traditional step up, baby swallow tail for hold and one of the better looking step ups we've seen. From just overhead to double overhead, it's an incredible option for waves like Rifles, Kandui, Bank Vaults, etc. If you're looking for a longer, narrower option, Christenson also makes a Water Loin Ultra.

Two Questions We Get Asked on a Regular Basis: 1. What's the Heaviest Wave in Indonesia? 2. Who's the Best Surfer You've Seen in the Mentawai? 🧐🧐🧐🧐 While everyone has an opinion these days, after almost 20 years in the Mentawai and Indonesia, the heaviest waves we've come across are Kandui Left, GreenBush and Desert Point Grower. In regard to Best Surfer, of course Kelly, Andy, etc are top of the list but ask any of our local surfing crew, one name comes up every time without hesitation, Nate "McNasty" Behl. Nate has what we call the perfect combination of Talent and Stupidity. Talented enough to ride the heaviest surf in Indonesia and stupid enough to think any wave is makeable. What's the Difference Between April and May? 🧐🧐🧐🧐 We get this question a lot and both months are similar in regard to the type of surf you get. Early March is when the Shoulder-Season tails off and as you enter April, you start seeing more swell mixed in with fun size surf. As you enter May, the surf increases more and the chance of bigger rights (Bank Vaults, etc) increase with each day of the month. You see more people during late March, April and May but there's always more waves to choose from due to more options opening up with more swell. A general rule of thumb is you're after the fun size surf only, visit for Jan/Feb and if you're after bigger rights mixed with fun size surf, visit in late March, April and May.
