It’s a hard time to be alive, but I’m grateful to be. This is something I keep repeating, in my head, and to others. As much as there is endless fatigue and grief in all of us, for so many reasons, there is more to stand for now than ever. Since the early pandemic, the amount of food inequity, hunger and food waste has haunted me. I had and have the power and privilege to do something about it. Maybe, you do too. Maybe, you might need some help.
If you live in NYC, our beautiful city & communities have created community fridges in all of our boroughs. Most of these have no city-funding and are run by volunteers and mutual aid groups. Most fridges take opened/unopened food — fresh, canned, perishable, shelf-stable, etc. A lot of them take cooked/homemade food, if you label with the date made, what it is and any allergens. Anyone can donate and anyone can take what they need. No questions asked.
If you’re in my industry and see waste, if you have privilege, if you have an abundance of food, if you have wealth, if you have something to give, I urge you to donate to these fridges, or donate to the mutual aids in your neighborhoods and others.

@ourplace sent me this pan that I have used on countless shoots and to feed others in need. They, too, care about hunger. They have partnered with the Los Angeles Food Policy council and brands like
@lagoodfood to bring accessible, healthy food to the people (esp. in South LA). Not only is this pan beautiful and functional — It steams, sears, sautés, braises, AND the edges are high enough that it keeps splattering to a minimum — but, I can stand behind the woman-founded, POC-owned, food-fighting mission that they stand for.
*In honor of the gift I received, I’ve donated the amount across four mutual aids/food inequity groups in NYC:
@chfgaid @foodissuesgroup @bxmutualaidnetwork &
@bedstuystrong .
If you’re interested in buying this pan or supporting this brand, you can get $10 off your purchase with the code JULIAGARTLAND.
Hope you are all hanging in there, but most importantly, fed.
