If you grew up watching dinosaur documentaries in the 2000s then this song will hit you hard in the nostalgia. At the Arizona Museum of Natural History they have a nice tribute to segment 4 of When Dinosaurs Roamed America from the Zuni Basin during the middle Cretaceous. Here we have a Zuniceratops being pursued by a much smaller Suskityrannus. Happy #worldbearday from the #fieldmuseum. Arctodus was a “short-faced” bear that inhabited much of North America during the last Ice Age. It had extremely long arms leading to a hypothesized long distance running lifestyle. Original depictions of this bear reconstructed it as a hyper-carnivore or kleptoparasite. More recent investigation suggests a more omnivorous diet. This may LOOK like a crocodile but it is actually a phytosaur; an extinct group of reptiles that inhabited the freshwater lakes and rivers of the Triassic. Their similarity in appearance to crocodilians is an example of convergent evolution. Many times throughout earth’s history there has been a semi-aquatic ambush predator lying in wait at the water’s edge for an unsuspecting animal to come by for a drink…then SNAP! You may recognize Placerias, Postosuchus, Desmatosuchus, and Eudimorphodon from documentaries such as Walking With Dinosaurs and When Dinosaurs Roamed America. These are some of the animals that lived alongside and competed with some of the earliest dinosaurs.
