It is a great honor to have one of my images, taken during the MOSAiC science expedition in the Central Arctic Ocean during polar night, featured in @natgeo
National Geographic's "100 Best Photos - Iconic Images from this Century" special issue. You can find the magazine now in the newsstands.
Thank you @brebirk
for your beautiful work with this issue.
Story behind the image: In September 2019, the German research icebreaker Polarstern set sail to spend a year drifting through the Central Arctic Ocean - frozen in sea ice. The goal of the MOSAiC expedition, led by Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research @awiexpedition
, was to take the closest look ever at the Arctic as the epicenter of global warming and to gain fundamental insights that are key to better understand global climate change. Hundreds of researchers from 20 countries were involved in this exceptional endeavour. As the most extensive scientific expedition to the Arctic in history, MOSAiC used advanced instruments and sensors to conduct the first comprehensive assessment of the region.
