By helicopert, we followed a group of scientists to Gepatschferner, one of the largest glaciers in the Alps, to cover how they were retrieving a mummified chamois — an endearing goat-antelope mix. This summer, the Alps' 4,000 glaciers are melting at an unprecedented rate, exceeding the worst years to date by about 7x. Scientists who've been studying glaciers for decades describe the melt as unfathomable. It's sad, but it's also the best chance we ever had at finding ice mummies -- an animal or even a prehistoric human that could have lived thousands of years ago. Loved reporting this story for
