Greek-Australian Georgia Constance launched her eponymous brand in 2020 that quickly gained attention. Although born and raised in Sydney, GC’s Greek heritage has had a significant influence on her designs. Her clothes are bold, feminine, and inspired by a variety of sources, from Greek islands to her loved ones. The idea for her brand came to her while she was in Mykonos and wished she had a more fun and sparkly clothing item with her that would take her from the day to the night. All her pieces are made on mesh, which means they are light, breathable, and move with the body. She finds her inspiration from people and places, and all her pieces are named after friends or places that hold a special meaning to her. For instance, her Corinthian Shirt is named after the city of Corinth in Greece, where her grandfather is from. When asked about what the process from idea to actual production looks like, GC explained that it’s a bit more tricky than one would expect. “I manufacture in India and I wasn’t able to travel through the covid era. I’d usually design a piece and show it through a sketch or pinning fabric to a mannequin and sending the images over to my team in India, who would bring it to life through a preliminary sample. The sample would be sent to Sydney, and I’d try it on and see what amendments needed to be made. When I was happy with the finished product, it would be put into production, and it would be photographed before it hits online. Whilst this sounds over simplified, it can be very lengthy.” For the future, GC would love to open flagship stores in both Athens and Sydney. She believes that starting a fashion brand requires 30 seconds of pure insane courage and a strong support network. “Have a clear image in your head, be kind to yourself, and know you’ll make a lot of mistakes along the way. Don’t underestimate your network. All my friends doubled up as models and photographers and I was fortunate to be able to tap into them and utilise them.” GC has a deep appreciation for Greek designers and she believes that there are many brands that deserve spotlight.
