Thanks to the fog, San Francisco, a city of only 46.89 square miles, is home to several microclimates. I’ve always loved watching the fog roll in, but during the pandemic I’ve found this activity be even more relaxing than usual. Today and tomorrow the six of us from Group 29 will share individual photo essays edited by each other in a collaborative process. These are our personal reflections from Nicaragua, Mexico and the U.S. Laura Morton (@laurakmorton ) is a freelance documentary photographer based in San Francisco, California. In response to the COVID-19 virus, San Francisco and five other Bay Area counties issued a shelter-in-place order that began on 12:01 am March 17, the first widespread order of its kind in the United States. Residents were still allowed outside for exercise, provided they maintain a 6-foot distance from people they don’t live with. After the shelter-in-place went into effect I took long walks around the city for my daily exercise, often with my camera. On these walks, I ended up seeing my city from a new perspective. Many sites that were usually bustling with tourists were now completely devoid of people. Thinking back to this day five years ago when I documented a “cuddle puddle” party in San Francisco, California. The event was a fundraiser for the Burning Man camp Disco Chateau as well as a Pride weekend celebration. In our new reality of social distancing I’m feeling nostalgic about the memory of this event.
