So long, winter coats. And hello, spring flowers. Our long, chilly winter finally comes to an end on Monday with the vernal equinox, which marks the beginning of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. According to National Geographic, equinoxes are when Earth’s subsolar point (where the sun’s rays shine perpendicular to the Earth’s surface) passes through its equator. During an equinox, the center of the sun’s disk is in the same plane as the equator. After the vernal equinox in March, the Northern Hemisphere tilts toward the sun, until the June solstice, when it begins to migrate south.
We’re headed to the @bronxzoo today for our third of 5 birthday celebrations! This lovely lady is Sia, and today is her 17th birthday! Born and raised in NY, Sia’s keepers say she “is energetic and sweet natured. Keepers love the funny faces and “smiles” she makes. She is the youngest in her group, and can be very mischievous with the older females. The red-billed quelea is a small passerine noted for its colorful feathers and bright red bill. It is also known as the weaver bird. It is a sociable bird that travels in huge flocks of up to 30 million members. In 1904, Ota Benga, a young African boy, was kidnapped from Congo and taken to the United States of America and displayed like an animal at the @bronxzoo Bronx Zoo in New York City, New York.. On arrival, he was put in a zoo with monkeys and was displayed together with them. On March 20, 1916, most likely overcome with depression and heartbreak, Ota Benga committed suicide in Lynchburg, Virginia. 🐸Happy World Frog Day!🐸 Meet the Kihansi Spray Toad. Endemic to Tanzania, it's entire population was found only at the base of the Kihansi River waterfall. However, due to habitat loss and disease, the Spray Toad was declared extinct in the wild in 2004, and is now found in a small collection of zoos. But conservationists have been hard at work to help bring these amphibians back from the brink, with the help of a controlled breeding program through several zoos. And in August of 2010, the Bronx and Toledo Zoos brought nearly 100 Kihansi Spray Toads to Tanzania, so they can be reintroduced to their natural environment. Sharks in the water may be a given in some places; alligators too. But in New York City, they’re not thought of as common, which is why it was such a shock when an alligator was found and saved from a lake in Brooklyn last month. The now infamous female gator named Godzilla found a new, temporary home at the Bronx Zoo as it not only recovers from the cold as a result of its abandonment, but from a bathtub stopper it swallowed — it is unclear whether this happened before or after it arrived at the park. The city Parks Department, which oversaw Godzilla’s capture and transportation to the zoo, believes she was a domesticated pet who had been dumped by her owner.
