On this clear night of March, I witnessed an outbreak of aurora borealis. Apparently it excited me far more than the Icelandic horses who are used to this majestic phenomenon. They are small but long-lived, hardy horses, developed from ponies brought to Iceland by Norse settlers a thousand years ago. There are about 180,000 registered Icelandic horses and more than half of them are exported to other countries. World-wide population of horses is about 60 million, including around 600,000 wild horses. Horses were first domesticated about 6000 years ago in Eurasian Steppe, in modern day Ukraine and Kazakhstan.
