Survivors of wildfire, especially those who remain in the area and live in the burn scar, often struggle with the psychological effects of being constantly confronted by reminders of such a traumatic event. A new program at Chico State is using forest therapy, which draws on the Japanese practice of forest bathing, to help wildfire survivors heal their trauma. On assignment for @washingtonpost Sarah Kaplan and I travelled to Butte County to meet with survivors of the 2018 Camp Fire, the deadliest fire in California history, and observe them participating in the forest therapy program. Thank you to all the wonderful people we met for sharing their stories and for @akvoisard for sending me on this one.
